A mural decorates one of Varna’s underpasses thanks to a joint initiative by “My Razom” Association, construction corporation KUB, and Ukrainian cuisine restaurant “Stefania”.
To mark the Day of Bravery and the Bulgarian Army, one of the city underpasses in Varna has been transformed into a colorful mural, thanks to a collaborative initiative between the "My Razom" Association, the construction corporation KUB, and the Ukrainian restaurant “Stefania”.
The mural project turned into a vibrant family event where anyone willing could join in and paint a part of the artwork. The artists who designed the project held a small master class on working with paints, and the restaurant “Stefania” treated all participants to complimentary refreshments.
The main painting work lasted almost two weeks and required more than 160 liters of paint. Local residents expressed their gratitude to the organizers for improving the underpass. According to the artists, beyond its aesthetic value, the mural also reflects the gratitude of the Ukrainian community in Varna for the shelter and support received during the war, symbolizing mutual respect between the two nations and their traditions.
“I always try to adapt my style to the space – to integrate the artwork into its surroundings. In this case, it’s an urban setting next to a restaurant with ethnic cuisine. That’s why the mural combines floral and marine elements shared by both Ukrainian and Bulgarian cultures, as well as geometric motifs representing the city and coexistence,” explained one of the authors, Odessa-based artist Georgii Khazankin.
Permission for the mural from Varna Municipality and funding were secured by KUB Corporation – an international association of construction companies with Ukrainian roots, currently developing several premium-class residential projects in Bulgaria’s sea capital. The initiative was also supported by “My Razom,” an association that helps Ukrainian refugees in Varna.
“The construction business has taught me that the key to successful development and effective cooperation lies in taking equal responsibility for both completed and future projects. Ukrainians in Varna have grown to love this beautiful city, and I’m happy we found a way for them to give back to its residents and administration, showing our shared concern for the urban environment,” said Oleg Nevzorov, CEO of KUB Corporation.
“This mural project is one of many community initiatives we are planning and implementing in Bulgaria. Last year, we organized a clean-up event in the Sea Garden with participation from both Bulgarians and Ukrainians. More recently, together with our partners, we cleaned up Kabakum Beach.
To us, this is a natural way to say 'thank you' to the country that welcomed us. It’s also an effective way to integrate into society. We’re grateful to our partners and to the local people who continue to support us,” said Kristina Vier, head of the Ukrainian community organization “My Razom”.
